Netflix has made a groundbreaking move in the world of sports entertainment by securing a multibillion-dollar, decade-long deal for exclusive rights to WWE’s flagship weekly wrestling show, "Raw." This strategic partnership, announced by Netflix and WWE’s parent company, TKO Group, signifies a major expansion in Netflix's live content offerings.
Starting in January 2025, "Raw" will be exclusively available on Netflix, marking a significant shift from its traditional broadcast channels. The deal, valued at over $5 billion for a 10-year period with options for extension or early termination, also grants Netflix the rights to stream WWE’s other shows and specials outside the United States.
Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer, expressed enthusiasm about merging WWE’s massive fanbase with Netflix’s global reach and content curation expertise. This collaboration is set to enhance the viewing experience for both WWE audiences and Netflix subscribers.
This agreement marks a notable expansion of Netflix's live programming portfolio, which until now has included reality shows like "Love Is Blind." Despite past technical challenges with live shows, Netflix's successful airing of a live Chris Rock comedy special indicates its growing capability in this domain.
Netflix's venture into live sports-adjacent content positions it to compete more aggressively with rivals like Peacock and Amazon Prime, which have been streaming live sporting events. The deal also aligns with Netflix's recent focus on sports documentaries and drama, as emphasized by co-chief executive Ted Sarandos.
Under the new arrangement, "Raw," which has been a staple on USA Network since its inception, will undergo a significant platform shift. Additionally, Netflix plans to develop scripted television and films based on WWE’s intellectual property, leveraging the wrestling promotion's storied history and fan appeal.
The WWE's monthly premium live events currently streamed on Peacock will remain unaffected, as they fall under NBC Universal's purview.
This landmark deal not only signifies a new era for WWE's "Raw" but also heralds Netflix's strategic pivot toward blending live entertainment with its traditional on-demand content model, promising a dynamic and enriched viewing experience for millions worldwide.
