French AI lab Mistral is charting its path toward an initial public offering (IPO), CEO and co-founder Arthur Mensch revealed during an interview with Bloomberg at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
Mensch emphasized that Mistral is “not for sale” and confirmed the company's plans to expand its global footprint by opening an office in Singapore to target the Asia-Pacific market. In addition to growing its presence in Europe and the U.S., Mensch affirmed, “Of course, [an IPO is] the plan.”
Founded in 2023 by Mensch and former researchers from Google’s DeepMind and Meta, Mistral is widely regarded as Europe’s response to U.S. AI giants like OpenAI. The company develops advanced AI models and services, including a ChatGPT-style platform named Le Chat, positioning itself as a significant contender in the global AI race.
Since its inception, Mistral has raised approximately $1.14 billion from prominent investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, and Lightspeed Venture Partners. The company was last valued at around $6 billion, reflecting strong confidence in its potential to challenge U.S.-based incumbents.
An IPO would mark a significant milestone for Mistral, offering the company additional capital to fuel its ambitious growth plans and further establish itself as a leading player in the competitive AI landscape. The move could also symbolize a shift in the global AI ecosystem, with Europe stepping up as a major contributor to the field.
As Mistral expands into Asia and scales operations in other key markets, its IPO will likely be closely watched as a pivotal moment for European AI innovation.
