Sotheby’s to Launch First-Ever International Auction in Saudi Arabia with ‘Origins

Sotheby’s has announced it will host its inaugural international auction in Saudi Arabia on February 8, 2025, marking a significant cultural milestone in the Kingdom. Set to take place in the historic UNESCO heritage town of Diriyah, near Riyadh, the auction, titled Origins, will feature a remarkable range of items, from fine art to luxury collectibles. Among the pieces on offer is a diptych from renowned Saudi artist Ahmed Mater’s The Illumination Series, alongside Islamic artifacts, jewelry, watches, cars, and designer handbags.

Accompanying this auction, Sotheby’s will open a new office in Riyadh’s Al Faisaliah Tower, signaling the house’s deeper commitment to Saudi Arabia’s burgeoning cultural scene. Edward Gibbs, chairman of Sotheby’s Middle East & India, emphasized that the Kingdom’s vision, aligned with the government’s Vision 2030 program, fosters a “cultural renaissance.” This transformative period, marked by ambitious museum projects and a dynamic art community, has fueled demand for greater accessibility to international art.

The auction will precede a free public exhibition of the lots from February 1 to 8, allowing local and international audiences to experience these significant works in person. Sotheby’s CEO, Charles F. Stewart, noted that with its presence in Riyadh, the house aims to engage Saudi Arabia’s large youth demographic and bolster the country’s artistic landscape.
