A new contender in the connected fitness industry has emerged: Growl, an innovative boxing bag designed to bring immersive, gamified workouts into your home. Inspired by industry pioneers like Peloton and Tonal, Growl reimagines the ancient punching bag as a tech-forward, full-scale fitness coach.
Growl’s unique system consists of two components:
The device's standout feature is its projector, which projects a life-sized coach onto the bag. This creates a virtual, one-on-one coaching experience, complete with performance metrics displayed on the wall. Growl also gamifies workouts with interactive modes reminiscent of "Tap Tap Revenge," making fitness engaging and fun.
While Growl’s core focus is boxing, it aims to be a comprehensive fitness solution. The platform will feature a library of content, including yoga, Pilates, and strength training, ensuring its appeal to a broad audience.
Léo Desrumaux, Growl’s CEO, emphasizes that the device transforms boxing workouts by combining cutting-edge technology with high-quality coaching. He said, “Our goal is to make it feel like your coach is physically in the room with you.”
Growl’s device is priced competitively within the premium connected fitness market at $4,500. Customers can opt for financing, with monthly payments plus a subscription fee for content updates, keeping costs comparable to a high-end gym membership.
The company plans to start pre-orders in April 2025, with the first units shipping by 2026.
Growl enters a competitive industry dominated by cycling, rowing, and strength-training devices. However, Desrumaux believes boxing’s niche appeal and Growl’s innovative approach will help it stand out.
Drawing lessons from Peloton’s pandemic-era boom and bust, Desrumaux emphasizes financial discipline. He noted, “Covid was a brief interlude. The market returned to its original growth trajectory. Our focus is on steady, sustainable growth.”
Headquartered in Austin, Texas, and Paris, France, Growl boasts a strong advisory board, including Sam Bowen, former VP of hardware engineering at Amazon and Tonal. With $4.75 million in seed funding from notable investors like Skip Capital and UFC heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane, the startup is positioned to disrupt the connected fitness landscape.
Growl’s combination of advanced technology, versatile content, and immersive design could redefine at-home fitness, offering an exciting alternative for users seeking personalized, high-energy workouts.
