French Health Insurer Alan Introduces AI-Driven Healthcare Features and New Wellness Offerings in Bid for Super App Status

French health insurer Alan, renowned for its insurance offerings, is pushing further into healthcare technology with the launch of a virtual health assistant, Mo, integrated into its user chat feature. This AI chatbot, vetted by medical professionals, allows users to ask health-related questions and receive answers reviewed by a doctor within 15 minutes. Alan’s AI lead, Antoine Lizée, emphasized the need for proactive healthcare solutions as users look for greater control over their health.

Though Mo aims to enhance healthcare accessibility, it comes amid scrutiny over AI’s reliability in medical settings due to issues like hallucinations—errors that can mislead or misdiagnose. Alan has implemented several safeguards to ensure Mo’s information accuracy, including doctor reviews on AI responses, providing users with follow-up messages on the doctor’s assessment of Mo’s advice. Initially trialed with 900 users, Mo will now be accessible to Alan’s 680,000 customers, with the company planning to incorporate personalized features over time.

Beyond AI, Alan is introducing additional app features. An in-app shop offers a curated selection of wellness products, primarily French brands, and discounts for members. Additionally, Alan Walk, a gamified step-counter, encourages movement by rewarding users with “berries,” which can be redeemed for charitable donations, store discounts, or avatar customization.

CEO Jean-Charles Samuelian-Werve underscored that these additions reflect Alan’s broader strategy to unify health insurance, wellness, and preventive care into a seamless experience. The company, recently valued at $4.5 billion, is expanding beyond Europe and plans to enter Canada soon, aiming to reshape health insurance for a broader international audience.
