Lucid Opens Preorders for Gravity SUV as Production and Financial Pressures Mount

Lucid Motors has officially opened preorders for its highly anticipated Gravity SUV, a critical new model set to go into production by year’s end. Interested buyers can reserve the "Grand Touring" trim with a refundable $1,000 deposit on Lucid’s website. Starting at $94,900, the Grand Touring model boasts over 440 miles of range, 828 horsepower, and comes with a flexible seating configuration of two or three rows.

This launch is essential for Lucid’s growth, as the Gravity’s SUV design appeals directly to the North American market. Unlike the Air sedan, Lucid’s current model, the Gravity offers the practicality and form factor SUV buyers prefer, and Lucid hopes this will drive up its sales. A more affordable “Touring” version will start at $79,900, though it’s slated for a late 2025 release.

Lucid faces the challenge of affordability, especially as its high-end vehicles do not qualify for the federal EV tax credit at the point of sale due to their price. However, a $7,500 tax credit remains available for leases, though this may be subject to review under the incoming Trump administration. Lucid has also depended heavily on majority stakeholder Saudi Arabia for additional funding, underscoring the pressure to increase sales after the initial excitement from its 2021 public debut through a $4 billion reverse merger.
